Every year I tell myself that I want to climb those 100 steps to see the views from one of Bangor’s landmarks. This historic site is opened to the public just four times a year (once each season). I’m really bummed this time because I was actually in Bangor today and had my camera with me. That’s what happens when you listen to the satellite radio in the vehicle instead of the local stations—you have no idea what may be going on locally.
The standpipe was built in 1897 to help regulate Bangor’s water pressure in the downtown area and to provide water storage for emergencies. It is still in use today. There is quite a lot of information on the standpipe on the internet so I won’t repeat it. Check the Wikipedia for more detail.
If ever you are in Bangor on one of the days that it is opened to the public, it would definitely be worth
checking out—I know this because I see the photo’s on TV AFTER it is over. The days that it will be opened again in 2009 are the Spring Tour, May 20th, 2009 – 3:00 – 6:00 p.m.; Summer Sunset Tour, July 22, 2009 – 5:00 – 9:00 p.m.; and the Fall Foliage Tour, October 14, 2009 -3:00 – 6:00 p.m.
It would be a great way to get your exercise for the day and who knows, we may even meet up there!!
That’s OK, you’ll probably get some great shots on the summer sunset tour! BTW, are you packed yet for your FL getaway?! : D
Not packed yet! We still have two days left. No hurry.
Until I go into a panic sometime today.
