I always wish that I could have the nerve to try street photography. There are a LOT of interesting characters out there but it seems rude to just stick a camera in someones face. Today, I was in New Bern, NC, when I saw this scary, old, wrinkled woman sitting on a porch in a squeaky rocking chair holding a skull. I stopped the car down the block and crept back up the street, hoping she would not notice that I was photographing her. After all, she is a witch and could cast a spell on me. BOO!! Here she is.Well, as you might imagine, she was not upset with me for taking her photo.
An interesting thing happened while I was photographing this Halloween display. A bearded fella came around the corner riding his bicycle on the sidewalk. Yep, he was on the sidewalk and came around the corner just as I got there. He slammed on his brakes and came to a screeching halt and asked, “are you taking pictures”? That made me smile because there I was with my camera in hand so it was pretty obvious.
I have to admit, that I thought the next thing that he would do is ask me if I could spare a few dollars. That has happened to me a couple of times in New Bern before, so I thought, “here we go”!! What he did was WAY more interesting though. As I started to walk by him, he kind of put his hands on his lapels and threw his head back and said “Take my picture”. This is where the real street photography comes in – only this time I was being given permission. “Are you serious”?, I asked. He again said, “yes, take my picture” and so I did. I knew there was a church steeple behind him that looked like it was sticking out of his head but I wasn’t going to ask him to move. 🙂 I am not really good at people photos but since he was giving me an opportunity, I shot two quick photos and thanked him. I was sure that this was the time he was going to ask for a few dollars. Yep, I know, I am pretty cynical. But you know what?? He just seemed very pleased. He smiled at me and told me to have a nice day and away he rode on his bicycle. Yep, still on the sidewalk. 🙂
