I think that I have mentioned before that we think that North Carolina may be a good place for us to live when we decide to buy another home. Seasons that change without the drastic changes that we have in Maine has a great appeal to us. With a move SOMEDAY in our minds, we checked a few places out on our way to Florida. For now, we will take mini-trips and ultimately spend more time in places that we find the most appealing.
Asheville, located in the heart of the Blue Ridge mountains, was the first stop. It is the largest city in western North Carolina and the county seat of Buncombe County. It is an incredibly beautiful place with tons of stuff to see and do. I didn’t get any photo’s from the downtown area. We took a short ride on the Blue Ridge where I got the photo below. I can just imagine how beautiful this must have been when the leaves were in full color. While in the area, we also checked out Hendersonville, a small town about 22 miles southeast of Asheville. We visited the town on Veteran’s Day and we were lucky enough to take part in the small town celebration. While walking down Main street the hubby spied this neat little toy shop and couldn’t resist checking it out. Boys will be boys…Both Asheville and Hendersonville are really great places and would make a great place to live for many folks but for us, not so much. We DO want to go back for a visit though. There is a zip line in the area that has a lot of appeal plus many other attractions that we would like take the time to play tourist.
We visited one more town on our way out of the state and this town did have appeal. Hickory is about an hour south of Asheville. We spent about an hour with a very enthusiastic person at the Chamber of Commerce. She gave us a ton of information about the area. We spent the rest of the day checking the town out and we found the area to be quite impressive. It seems to have a lot going for it. Google and Apple both have a presence in the area and while the furniture making businesses have largely been moved overseas, the area is growing with new businesses.
Hickory definitely ends up on a list of places in North Carolina that we need to check out further. Only time will tell if it is THE place that we want to live. Sorry, but I forgot to take photo’s while I was there. Click HERE for a link to the the town website.
We decided to continue on to Florida from here so NC will have to wait for a bit. Stay tuned…I will be posting from Florida for a while.
