Maine is the northernmost portion of New England and is the easternmost state in the contiguous United States. It became the 23rd State on March 15, 1820. The scenery is spectacular from the rocky coastline to its mountains and forests. It consists of 33,215 square miles with a coastline of about 3,500 miles. There is over seventeen million acres of forestland and 6000 lakes and ponds.
