The harvest moon last night (Sept. 27) was a very special lunar event. What made it so special? It was not only the “harvest or corn” moon that happens every year but it was a “supermoon” meaning that the moon was at it closest point to earth in its orbit. As if that wasn’t special enough, folks all over the world were able to see a lunar eclipse as the moon passed into the earth’s shadow.
It is called a harvest moon because it is the full moon that falls closest to the autumn equinox which was September 23rd. It is at this time that most places on earth have equal hours of daylight and night. It is also called a harvest moon because it is time for farmers to reap their crops.
Last night, I went into Swansboro, hoping to find a picturesque spot to take a photo of the moon rising. This is what I got! Storm clouds on the horizon – actually they were everywhere!

I headed home, disappointed that I would not be able to witness this lunar event. Shortly after arriving back home, I went out on the back porch and saw that the cloud had started to clear and the moon was about to rise over the tree tops. I quickly set up the camera outside and started taking photos. First there was a glow in the night sky. Before too long, I began to see more breaks in the clouds and it looked like this. Still a lot of clouds but check out the moon!!
As I gazed skyward, the sky continued to clear and before I knew it, all I could see was stars and the moon. Yay!! The eclipse was visible to me just shortly after 9 PM. Below are some of the photos that I took.
A bit after 10 PM, this is what I saw!Actually, I really saw the entire moon darkened BUT the photo below is what happens when you trip over your tripod leg in the dark and can’t get a clear focus on the moon anymore. *sigh*What happened yesterday was rare. There have only been five supermoon eclipses since 1900 (in 1910, 1928, 1946, 1964 and 1982). The next supermoon eclipse will occur in 2033. Guess I won’t be around for the next one so I am really glad that I got to see this one. Are you wondering why you don’t see any photos from when it started the other way? I went into the house for a few minutes and when I got back outside, the clouds had come back in and it began to rain!! How lucky was it to be able to see what I did see though! Hope that you enjoy the photos.
