They always say that January is Maine’s coldest month—and boy have they been right the last few days! We did get a bit of a reprieve on Tuesday when the afternoon temps hit 32°. Unfortunately, it has been down hill since then.
I sat in the living room with my first cup of coffee while looking out the area that we feed the deer and spied what I thought was an antler that was shed. It is always exciting to find a shed and I couldn’t wait to check it out so I threw a jacket over my jammies, slipped on a pair of boots and out I went. It was only a branch but I sure was awake by the time that I got back in the house.
We got a new TV and cabinet so I spent part of the day sorting through all the stuff that had collected in the old cabinet. I tossed away most of the old VHS tapes (nothing to play them on anymore) and then I also got all the music cassette’s together that were also in the old cabinet. Wow! I didn’t realize that I had so many—and why the heck hadn’t I got rid of those years ago?! While going through the cassette’s, I found one with just one song on it. It is a piano piece done by David Lanz called Cristofori’s Dream.
It is funny how cleaning a cabinet can bring back wonderful memories. In the early 90′s, my hubby and I worked as rangers at Kidney Pond Camps in Baxter State Park. Kidney Pond Camps was a sporting camp at one time that is now owned by the park. On the shore of Kidney Pond was a wonderful rustic log building that housed a kitchen, dining hall and a library. Believe it or not, the library had a piano. Which brings me back to my memories. One evening we heard this wonderful song coming from the library and we were drawn to listen from the porch. The person that played that evening was a young girl that was probably not yet a teenager but she played this beautiful song with such skill. It was awe-inspiring to listen to this song in the midst of such solitude. It is a moment that will stay with us always. We lost touch with the young lady but hope that she still is playing the piano for others to enjoy. The temperature today only made it to 5° but memories of this occasion warmed my day. I am so blessed.
